Gap Store In Israel
Jerusalem/JTA — Gap will open its first
store in Israel. The Gap clothing retailer
opened Monday in Jerusalem at the
Mamilla Avenue, a corridor of high-end
retail shops running from the Jaffa Gate
of the Old City to King David Street.
Gap founders Doris and Donald Fisher,
who are Jewish, may attend the open-
ing, Ynet reported. A second store is set
to open in February in Herzliya.

Israel Aids India
Jerusalem/JTA— An Israeli defense
company will supply an air defense sys-
tem to the Indian Air Force. The Indian
cabinet approved the $1 billion deal
with the Israeli government-owned
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
Under the agreement, in 2011 and
2012, Rafael will provide 18 of the
SPYDER systems, which can intercept
missiles in a 25-mile radius. The deal
had been delayed following allega-
tions that Rafael has been involved in a
kickback scheme. This deal, the second
major deal that India has signed with
Rafael, makes Israel India's main weap-
ons supplier, the Israeli business daily
Globes reported on Aug. 20.

Eastern Jerusalem Building
Jerusalem/JTA — A plan to build new
Jewish housing in eastern Jerusalem
is being reviewed by the Jerusalem
municipality. The plan for the con-
struction of 104 housing units was
reported Sunday by several Israeli
news outlets. The plan also includes
a swimming pool, library, synagogue,
preschools and a mikvah.
The neighborhood, which is being
called Ma'aleh David, would be con-
structed on Jewish-owned land, on
which until 18-months ago sat the
Judea and Samaria police headquar-
ters, in the Arab neighborhood of Ras
al-Amud. It would be connected to
the existing Jewish neighborhood of
Ma'aleh Zeitim, home to some 50 fami-
lies and in the midst of constructing 66
more apartments.
The plans were filed for approval
last week with the municipality. If
approved, some 1,000 Jews in the two
connected neighborhoods would live
in middle of some 14,000 Palestinians,
according to Ha'aretz.

"A two state solution requires provi-
sions for Palestinian building in East
Jerusalem. The goal of this plan is to
establish facts on the ground on a scale
that would thwart such a solution.
Advancement of this plan will stoke the
flames in Jerusalem and is liable to lead
to a Hebronization of the city,"Yudith
Oppenheimer, executive director of the
non-governmental group Ir Amim, that
monitors Jewish settlement activity in
east Jerusalem, told Ha'aretz.

Formal Alliance Explored

Washingt, on/JTA — Two dovish pro-
Israel groups are exploring a formal
collaborative relationship.
"Brit Tzedek's Board of Directors is
interested in discussing with J Street
how best its network of chapters, activ-
ists and rabbis can potentially align
with J Street's political, lobbying and
communications operations to make
our movement as effective and far-
reaching as possible," Brit Tzedek said
in an Aug. 18 statement.
Jeremy Ben Ami, J Street's execu-
tive director, said in a statement timed
for simultaneous release that "J Street
is excited to explore how a national
grassroots operation can enhance our
existing work, building support and
momentum for U.S. efforts to promote
peace and security in the Middle East."
The announcement comes as J Street
is seeking a national field director for
grass roots organizing and Brit Tzedek
dropped its own search for an executive
director.
J Street is a lobbying and advocacy
group with a separate political action
fund-raising arm. Brit Tzedek is a
grass-roots group that claims to have
about 45,000 activists nationwide.
J Street in part was the result of
efforts led by Ben Ami several years ago
to unite the dovish pro-Israel groups.

Israeli Docs Dwindling
Jerusalem/JTA — The number of doc-
tors per capita in Israel is dropping to
serious levels, according to a Health
Ministry report.
At the end of last year, there were
3.5 doctors under the age of 65 per
1,000 people in Israel, compared
with 3.7 per 1,000 at the end of 2000,
according to the report.
