teenage athlete and he con-

he worked in his law practice three
times a week.
Mr. Silber, of Southfield, died Aug.
14, 2009, at age 97.
At age 14, a long-
jump and high-jump
star at City College
in Detroit, he was the
youngest person in the
history of the NCAA to

in sports and has been
nominated for inclu-

of Fame of the college's
successor, Wayne State
University. He went
Albert Silber
on to win nine state
AAU championships and just missed
qualifying for the 1932 Olympics in
Los Angeles.
In 1993, Mr. Silber was inducted
into the Michigan Jewish Sports
Hall of Fame. As a 6'-3" young man,
he played center on Detroiter Cincy
Sachs' semi-pro team. Their oppo-
sition included Abe Saperstein's
Harlem Renaissance Ballroom squad
(later known as the Globetrotters).
Along with Sachs, he was a promoter
of the First World Championship
between the New York Celtics and the
Harlem Renaissance,
Mr. Silber graduated University of
Michigan Law School at age 20 and
had to wait a year until he reached
21 to sit for the Michigan Bar exam.
During his 76-year law practice, his
clients included Motown singer Mary
Wells, auto racecar legend Roger
Penske and UAW President Walter
Reuther.
"I've had a client I've represented
since 1938 — 69 years," he said in

and practicing attorney from U-M
Law School and was to be honored at

month.

master bridge player who won wide-
spread acclaim for an unorthodox
move which confounded a bridge-
playing computer
he was challenging.
Among his other tal-
ents, he also dabbled
in songwriting.
Mr. Silber was also
longest annual contrib-
utor to the American
Jewish Congress.
