Gazing And Grazing

Paintings in this Gallery are eyes-only, but the food pleases the palate!

F

rom the interior looks, it would
seem that he had a decision to
make ... Open an art gallery or a
restaurant.
As it stands today, the thought would
look as if Stephan Becharas might have
said, "Why not both?" ... And that Stephan
followed his thinking and opened it as
both a combination family restaurant and
art gallery.
However, such wasn't the case, even
though the dining atmosphere easily could
have dictated this ... The walls are covered
from seam to seam with paintings that
make up a select look-see appearance ...
And in the center of this sea of eye-pop-
ping glamour comprised of not-for-sale
paintings, artifacts, antiques, dishes,
Orientals, etc., is Stephen's ultra-clean
Gallery Family Restaurant, celebrat-
ing its 26th anniversary of being in the
Bloomfield Plaza, Telegraph and 15 Mile,
Bloomfield Township.
The 135-seater Gallery Restaurant, open
seven days for breakfast, lunch and din-
ner, Monday-Saturday, 7-9:30; Sunday, 8-9,
may have the appearance of both, but as a
restaurant it far out-shadows its surround-
ings of framed art which usually draw may
requests for purchasing, but are never sold
... Paintings like the portrait of a rabbi
bring large requests ... Gallery Restaurant
is the fourth occupant at the choice spot,
following Angelo's on the Plaza, Ginger
Man and Crickets ... Only the four walls
were intact when Stephan took over the
site ... He and wife Irene had originally
opened the Gallery on 10 Mile, east of
Evergreen in the early 1970s and onto the
present site in 1983.
Every day brings a different special
lunch and dinner, with Irene's brother
