Counselor Removed
Tamarack Camps send teen home
after unspecified allegations.
Alan Hitsky
Associate Editor
T
he Michigan State Police are
investigating allegations of
misconduct against a teenage
counselor at Camp Maas in Ortonville.
Three parents called Tamarack
Camps Executive Director Jonah
Geller on Friday, July 31, the day their
campers returned from a 10-day
camp program. Geller called the par-
ents of the other six children in the
bunk on the same day.
Geller and Lee Trepeck, director
of Camp Maas, spoke with the coun-
selor and the counselor's parents on
Saturday morning, Aug. 1.
Geller also reported the allegations
to the state police, which has juris-
diction in Groveland Township.
Both camp and police officials
have limited the information they
released because the counselor is a
minor. Detective Sgt. Gary Muir of
the Groveland post said most of the
campers were interviewed this week
and a determination would be made
on further action.
Geller issued a written statement
that said, in part:
"The safety and well-being of
every camper is always our first
priority. We adhere to required camp-
ing industry standards regarding
safety, facility management, program
excellence and staff policies. The
Fresh Air Society [Tamarack Camps'
parent agency] is accredited by the
American Camp Association and
licensed by the state of Michigan.
"At the end of a 10-day Camp Maas
program, which concluded on Friday,
July 31, 2009, the parents of one cabin
group reported concerns regarding a
counselor's conduct. The counselor
was not permitted to return to camp.
Camp representatives properly report-
ed the allegations and the matter is
currently under investigation.
"We remain in communication
with the parents of all campers
involved. As the counselor is a minor,
no details relating to the individual
will be released.
"We remain committed to deliver-
ing a positive summer experience for
our entire camp community."
All camp sessions ended Friday,
Aug. 14.
