Goldsmith Awaits Federal Post
M
ichigan's two U.S. senators
have included a Jewish judge
from Oakland County among
their recommended nominees for U.S.
District Court seats.
On June 16, Senators
Carl Levin and Debbie
Stabenow nominated
Judge Mark Goldsmith,
56, of Oakland County
Circuit Court to fill one
of two vacancies at the
U.S. District Court for
the Eastern District of
Judge
Michigan. The vacan-
Goldsmith
cies were created when
federal judges Bernard Friedman and
John Corbett O'Meara eyed senior status.
In all, the senators have submitted
six names to President Obama to fill
vacancies for U.S. District Court and U.S.
Attorney in the Eastern and Western
districts of Michigan. The president
holds the final decision of whom to
nominate for Senate consideration. The
U.S. Department of Justice is doing
background checks in advance of a fall
presidential decision. The appointments
are lifetime.
Earlier this year, the senators convened
advisory committees in the two districts
to interview and recommend candidates.
Eugene Driker of Detroit chaired the 25-
member Eastern District committee.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm appointed
Goldsmith to Oakland County Circuit
Court in 2004. He is a former magistrate
of 45-B District Court in Oak Park.
Goldsmith previously worked in pri-
vate practice, handling criminal, civil and
administrator matters. He is a gradu-
ate of the University of Michigan and
Harvard University Law School.
He is a member of the Detroit-
based executive board of Wayne
State University's Center for Study of
Citizenship, the Fair Housing Advisory
Board of Legal Aid and Defender
Association Inc., and the American
Constitution Society/Michigan Chapter

"This year, despite a struggling
economy, the Birthright Israel
Foundation has been meeting its
fundraising goals on schedule,
allowing 10,000 participants to take
their free 10-day educational trips to
Israel this summer and ensuring that
another 10,000 participants will travel
to Israel this winter. The numbers of
Jewish young adults that Birthright
Israel reaches are staggering. In
less than 10 years, over 200,000
participants from 52 countries have
already participated in the program."
— Daniel Och, chair; Robert Aronson, president
Board of Directors. He is past president
of Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak Park
and past chair of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit's Young Adult
Division executive committee. He is a
former adjunct instructor in the Wayne
State Law School. He helped establish
Circle of Friends, which teaches language
and acculturation skills to immigrants.
The Huntington Woods resident
is a current member of the Jean and
Theodore Weiss Partners in Torah
Program of the Yeshiva Beth Yehudah in
Southfield and Young Israel of Oak Park.
Neither Goldsmith nor Driker is
permitted to comment about the pend-
ing federal appointment. But Rabbi Avi
Cohen of Partners in Torah said, udge
Goldsmith is a tremendous mensh with
wonderful middot [ethical qualities]. It
is no surprise at all that someone of his
judgment, temperament and deliberative
nature is being recommended for this
important position."

• Use pest- and drought-resistant native plants.
• Take care of unwanted pests without toxic pesticides.
• Chip or compost yard waste instead of burning.
• Consider a berm (making a narrow shelf of earth) along
the north side of the building to help insulate. This berm can
take the form of raised garden beds, which can also allow one
to care for plants and vegetables more easily.
• Consider solar panels for heating your pool. Or be con-
scious of how much you are using to heat your pool.
• Use solar-powered pathway lights instead of wired lights.
• Use alternatives to lighter fluid like charcoal chimney or
electric starters.
Jewish Thought On The Environment
"And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every
tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food; the tree
of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil."
