She was 76. "Ester was a wonderful mother who, besides taking care of her kids and family, helped her own mother when she finally arrived in Israel from Romania with the youngest kids in 1950," said Hannan. "Family was her No. 1 priority:' he added. `As a child of war herself, she devoted her life to creating a loving and supportive home for her family:' Born Ester Segal in Transylvania, Romania, in 1932, she grew up in a small village in Transylvania that was home to few Jewish families. The family owned a general store. The family was of Hungarian origin so Hungarian was the spoken family language. Ester was the middle daughter of six children. Her parents encouraged her to enroll in the Zionist youth movement BEITAR. At the beginning of World War II, the family fled their rural home to the safety of the large Jewish community in the capital city of Transylvania: Arad. They were fortunate to survive the war without being deported to a German concentra- tion camp. However, Ester's ailing father died right after liberation from the Nazi occupation. Her mother, seeing no future for a Jewish family in post-war Romania, sent the four oldest children to settle in Israel. In 1947, they sailed to Israel on a ship organized by the Irgun, the underground fighting the British for the liberation of Israel. Right before the ship reached Israel, the British navy intercepted it and the passengers were sent to a detention BARBARA SILBERT BURTON, 83, of West MONUMENT CENTER INC.
