T
eaching very old text through
very modern technology,
Rabbi Herschel Finman's
"YouParsha" presents a short video
discussion of each week's parshah
(Torah portion) that can be accessed
online on www.YouTube.com .
"It presents
ancient Jewish
ideals couched
in the jargon and
thought of the
21st century,"
Finman said.
"The Torah is a
living work in
progress — con-
stantly being
Rabbi Finman
developed and
expanded. The
medium of the Internet provides any-
one with access to a quick but mean-
ingful and thought-provoking insight
into the current events of Judaism."
Finman's know-how and deep,
articulate speaking voice add to the
appeal of YouParsha. Involved in
Jewish outreach for nearly 30 years,
he is currently the coordinator of
the Detroit Jewish Judicial Seminar,
an adjunct professor of philosophy
at Oakland Community College and
professor of Judaic studies at the
Michigan Jewish Institute. He coor-
dinates adult education classes and
seminars and learns with groups or
individuals on topics from beginning
Torah learning to advanced Kabbalah
and talmudic studies.
Experienced at speaking before
an audience, Finman facilitates the
Jewish Hour, Detroit's only Jewish
radio show. Featuring guests, Jewish
music, news from Israel, words of
Torah and chassidic stories, the pro-
gram is aired 3-5 p.m. Fridays on
WPON-AM 1460 radio and may be
accessed at www.wpon.com .
Next up for Finman is "Chasidic
YouStory.""It follows the same format
as YouParsha, but with me telling
a Chasidic story instead of the par-
shah," he said.
YouParsha is co-sponsored by the
Specs Howard School of Broadcast
Arts in Southfield and a grant from
the Paul and Leslie Magy Foundation.
Finman created YouParsha to fit
anyone's timetable, allowing each
viewer to watch the videos at their
own availability and in a short
amount of time.
"They are each about three min-
utes long to facilitate people's busy
schedules," Finman said. "Many peo-
ple don't have time for a 15- to 30-
minute lecture. YouParsha focuses on
one detail and discusses its relevance
to modern times." ❑
YouParsha may be accessed at www.youtube.com/youparsha.

Dead Sea, A Wonder
Jerusalem/JTA — The Dead Sea
is one of 28 finalists in an inter-
national competition to name the
seven natural wonders of the world.
The announcement was made
Tuesday by the New 7 Wonders of
Nature Foundation, which is orga-
nizing the competition. The Dead
Sea will compete with other natural
wonders such as the Amazon River,
the Galapagos Islands, the Grand
Canyon and the Maldives.
Competition organizers expect
more than a billion people to par-
ticipate in the online voting, which
will continue into 2011, when the
finalists will be announced.
Israeli Tourism Minister Stas
Misezhnikov announced that over
the next two years, the Tourism
Ministry will lead a campaign for
the Dead Sea in the contest via its
14 representative offices around the
world, its Web sites in 11 languages
and focused marketing activities. In
the framework of the campaign, the
ministry will emphasize the unique
attributes of the Dead Sea and pro-
mote tourism to the area.
