current Shorashim participants
to the school to participate in the
memorial service,' Lacefield said.
During the ceremony, she spoke
of Lash and read excerpts from
some of his writings about Israel.
When the placard on the jungle
gym was unveiled, Nameiri read its
words. "It says, in Hebrew and in
English, `This jungle gym is dedi-
cated as a living memorial to the
life of Matthew Lash, an inspiration
to all who knew him. The memory
of the righteous is blessed. Proverbs
Lacefield said.
The school now is organiz-
ing funding for the Matt Lash
Memorial Garden to be planted
near the jungle gym.

Because Of Matt
"The donation of playground
equipment has to be one of the
most moving memorials to be cre-
ated in Matt's memory," said his
mom, Roberta Lash of Novi. "So
many positive things have taken
place in honor of and in memory
of Matt. I can't help but think how
many have been, or will be helped,
out of this tragedy. All told, so
far more than $200,000 has been
donated in Matt's name:'
Contributions include $112,000
donated through Team Chaverim,
Lash's ongoing West Bloomfield
American Cancer Society Relay
For Life team. Among other funds
raised are those in support of the
Pediatric Hematology Oncology
Fund at William Beaumont
Hospital in Royal Oak and the
Pediatric Sarcoma Research Fund
at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
at the University of Texas. Lash's
classmates initiated and contrib-
uted to the Matthew Louis Lash
Scholarship Fund at his alma mater,
Chicago-Kent College of Law, which
is awarded annually to a student
with health challenges.
Following the playground dedica-
tion, Lacefield said, "I feel blessed to
be a part of such an amazing per-
son's life and am still shellshocked,
to this day, that all of that even hap-
pened; that we had a memorial for
Matt at the David Elazar School two
years after I was there with him.
"I still can't fully fathom that he
is gone. It is amazing, yet not at all
surprising, that every single one of
the students at the school not only
knows who Matt is, but also knows
that he was an incredibly special
human being."
