Dad, Daughter Fight Cancer
I want to thank you for publishing the
article on male breast cancer ("Male
Breast Cancer," July 23, page A34). Fred
Levine is the second man I have heard
of having breast cancer, the first being
my father, Sam Rosens.
Six years ago, my father noticed a
lump on his chest. He had a mastec-
tomy followed by chemotherapy.
Yes, my father had breast cancer. He
was not told about the BRCA genetic
mutation at the time. He was given the
drug Tamoxafin, a standard hormone
therapy given to women with breast
cancer to increase survival rates.
Last year, after almost five years of
taking Tamoxafin, the cancer metasta-
sized to his bones. One month before
he got this news, I was diagnosed with
breast cancer. When I initially met
with my oncology surgeon and she
found out my dad had breast cancer,
she suggested I have genetic testing.
My father also had the testing done.
We both tested positive for the BRCA2
genetic mutation. This put my father
at a higher risk for prostate cancer
and me at higher risk for the cancer
returning in my other breast and my
ovaries.
My father was given medication to
strengthen his bones and minimize
the cancer spreading as I went through
chemotherapy and a double mastec-
tomy with reconstruction.
Since my margins did not come
back clear, I followed up with more
chemotherapy. The cancer was attack-
ing my father's body rapidly and, as
I finished my last chemo treatment, I
got the call that he had taken a turn
for the worse. My family and I were by
his side for his last three days.
I was told about a study that I could
participate in to test the effects of
Zometa on breast cancer metastasiz-
ing to the bones. I signed up for the
study and also started radiation the
following month. I am also participat-
ing in a study that follows people with
the BRCA gene for 10 years.
I am glad to see the JN taking part
in public awareness on this subject. I
am also glad to see that genetic testing
is being recommended more and more
these days. Ashkenazi Jews with a his-

tory of breast, ovarian and prostate
cancer are at high risk for carrying the
mutation and developing cancer.

Torah-Based Noahism
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency article
"After the Ark" (July 16, page A17)
shows my partner, Jack Saunders, in
front of a rabbinic court in Jerusalem,
pledging to keep the Torah's universal
laws and shaking hands with Rabbi
Adin Steinsaltz.
Jack, a former Baptist pastor, was
there because we — Jack himself,
Rabbi Michael Katz and I, the three
directors of the First Covenant
Foundation — believed that he
belonged at this event.
The JTA writer, Ben Harris, inter-
viewed me for nearly an hour for this
story before he spoke to Jack because
much of what he knew about Noahism
he had learned from our Web site,
1stCovenant.org, and from our book
on the subject, Rainbow Covenant.
Jack, Rabbi Katz and I, along with
First Covenant's hundreds of mem-
bers, would appreciate it if your read-
ers could at least get a glimpse of our
Web site and hear about the book.
The two of them together we believe
— Web site and book — are the best
teaching anywhere on Noahism.

Corrections

• In "A Mother's World" (July 30, page
A23), parent Melissa Shepherd of West
Bloomfield should have been quoted,
"I don't want to be screened through a
nurse in a pediatrician's office for my
child."

•"School Tradition To End"(July 30,
page A8), should have stated that the
Oak Park Alumni Association event
is Monday, Aug. 18. Former Oak Park
High Athletic Director Howard Stone
is "retiring" from the event because he
wants more free time, not because of
heart surgery he had three years ago.
