Kosher Cookout Families enjoy Shomrey Emunah's annual summer tradition. p Robin Schwartz Columnist A14 July 30 . 2009 rayers for an outstanding forecast were answered with sunshine and blue skies as families flocked to the annual picnic hosted by Congregation Shomrey Emunah of Southfield. More than 100 people gathered at Beech-Woods Recreation Area in Southfield on July 19 for the day of family fun. Congregants and volunteers staffed the grills, serving up a full-scale glatt kosher barbecue. There were a moonwalk and games for the chil- dren. Members of the Southfield Police Department's SWAT team also attended and put on a dem- onstration."They brought a special Homeland Security vehicle, which is housed in Southfield," said Shomrey Emunah's Rabbi Shaiall Zachariash of Southfield. "It can travel fast and carry several police officers and it's completely armored. It can ram through a brick wall." Southfield's mayor, Brenda Lawrence, was in attendance as were several city officials. The Orthodox shul has carried on this popular fam- ily-friendly tradition for 27 years. Advertising for the event consists of a simple pulpit announce- ment after Shabbat services or a memo taped to a bakery window. Rabbi Zachariash says the many volunteers keep the picnic running smoothly year after year. "It has a lot of congregational spirit in it',' he said. "People really step up to the plate. It's just a fun day for everyone." Spotted in the crowd were: Deborah Hayes of Farmington Hills; and Michael Elman, Arey Schwartz, Jeff Brodman, Yehudit Jubas, Sherri Weil, Becky Friedman and Lisa Parshan, all of Southfield. 7,
