Paul Kohn and family and Quality Kosher Catering would like to express our sincerest York and Ilona Kabos in London as a Fulbright Scholar, has appeared internationally with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony and the Moscow State Symphony. "I've performed in Israel a couple of times — in Tel Aviv and in Jerusalem:' he says. "In the United States, I've done a program called `Jewish-American Composers: which is primarily made up of works by Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland, all who wrote significant piano music. I've done this at several synagogues with concert rooms or concert series:' Siegel, married and the father of a grown daughter and son, is based in New York and stays away from travel when he is not working. He enjoys spending time with books, films and dinner with friends. The pianist's summer reading includes a text on the Holocaust by Sir Martin Gilbert, a good friend, and a biography of Emma Thompson, the English actress, whose work he admires. The upcoming performance sea- son joins Siegel with other artists celebrating the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth, which actually takes place in 2010. "Chopin, who is one of the most popular and greatest composers of all time, wrote almost all of his music for the solo piano," Siegel explains. "He never wrote an opera, string quartet or symphony. "I'm celebrating Chopin in almost all of the cities where I do the Keyboard Conversations, and we will look at the different works of the composer and the different aspects of his life. "The opening program, 'Chopin for Lovers, has the compositions inspired by the different women in the composer's love life, and I don't have to fudge a bit. There are abso- lutely direct correlations between each piece of music and the particu- lar woman who inspired it." ❑ appreciation for all the good wishes and prayers during Paul's recent bout with altitude sickness. Bay Watch from page C7 William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe William Kunstler, a civil rights and anti-war attorney who also represent- ed accused murderers and terrorists, brought dramatic experiences into the lives of his two youngest daughters, Sarah and Emily, now in their early 30s and teamed as filmmakers. The sisters, who faced the notoriety of sensational trials and stunning vic- tories — many that reached back to the years before their births — bring their personal drama to the public through historic footage and inter- views in the movie about their dad, who died in 1994. "We've resurrected my father as a character and created this vehicle to look at his life and get some sense of who he was and the choices he made': explains Sarah, who graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in photography and went on to com- plete a degree at Columbia Law School. "We decided to make who we were an asset to the film. Being Bill's daugh- ters gave us permission to ask ques- tions that almost could be more critical than an outsider's could have been." Filmmakers Emily and Sarah Kunstler document the life of their civil rights/anti-war attorney-father in William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe. As the sisters were researching which cases to feature, they visited Michigan and spoke with Judge Damon Keith about a decision involving the White Panthers and phone tapping. That seg- ment ultimately was omitted. "We included the negative attention our father got from the Jewish com- munity when he took a very unpopu- lar case involving the murder of Rabbi Meier Kahane," says Emily, who holds a degree in film and video from New Bay Watch on page C10 RESTAURANT 501 MONROE DETROIT, Ml with purchase of an entree OR 25% O FF 313.962.9366 any bottle of wine mites August 31,2009 01 . 1 : ' Not valid with any other oiler, , • 11040 'thine foilitin per table' MEIN EIGSIfilt. ...11111111 •111111 11111111 SINN Milli July 23 2009 C9
