he Jewish War Veterans'
Bale Post No. 474 posthu-
mously inducted Benjamin
Shiffman into its ranks.
The genesis of this event was a
donation of materials to the Rabbi
Leo M. Franklin Archives at Temple
Beth El in Bloomfield Township. The
materials had belonged to the late
Benjamin Shiffman and were donat-
ed by his grandson, Dr. Douglas
Shiffman of Farmington Hills.
Earlier in the year, Dr. Shiffman
had given the War Veterans' Archives
a collection of his grandfather's
service-related photographs, corre-
spondence, scrapbooks and awards.
Collectively, they told the story of
Benjamin's service in the Spanish-
American War and his later dedica-
tion to his fellow veterans and the
Jewish War Veterans of Michigan.
Robert Sklar, editor of the Detroit
Jewish News, hosted the event. A
large Shiffman family contingent
shared their memories of their
grandfather.
Jan Durecki, Franklin Archives
archivist, gave a brief synopsis of
the Spanish-American War to place
Benjamin's service in context.
At the conclusion of the May 17
meeting, Dr. Shiffman said, "My
grandfather would never believe the
fuss that is being made over him."
Dr. Douglas Shiffman
"The donation of the Shiffman
Collection demonstrates how one
man's story can be used to tell the
larger story of military service
to America by Jewish men and
women," Durecki said.
Last year, the Jewish War Veterans'
Archives grew significantly. Many
of the photographs, artifacts and
portraits it contains were on display
in the temple's lobby prior to the
Memorial Day service on May 25.
The veterans enjoyed seeing pictures
of their World War II era comrades-
in-arms; Durecki was on hand to
encourage them to make similar
donations. FA
