SHENKMAN FELLOW

THE JACK & MIRIAM
SHENKMAN CAREGIVING
FELLOWSHIP TEAM

The Jack & Miriam Shenkman
Caregiving Fellowship Team is a skill
building program to train and develop
the best and the brightest in end-of-life
care. A Shenkman Fellow is known as
a leader in end-of-life care, both locally
and throughout the nation.

Shenkman Fellows will be top-notch
professionals who dedicate their careers
to end-of-life care for patients and their
loved ones. This distinction will be
promoted as a badge of honor — an
indication that recipients have
undergone the most rigorous and
wide-ranging training and professional
development available, and that they
are on the cutting edge of their field. For
ten years a new designee will be chosen
each year as a Shenkman Fellow.

THE SHENKMAN FELLOW FOR 2009:
RABBI HERSHEL KLAINBERG

Rabbi Klainberg brings a rich and
unique personal history to spiritual
caregiving. He was born in Germany to
Holocaust survivors in the Bergen-
Belsen Displaced Persons camp follow-
ing World War II. He immigrated to
the United States in 1950 and attended
Detroit's Yeshiva Beth Yehudah before
beginning rabbinic studies in New
York. He returned to his Detroit alma
mater where he enjoyed a 24-year
teaching career. As part of his own
continuing education, Rabbi Klainberg
completed CPE courses and earned his
degree in Pastoral Care.

FOR THE FINEST HOSPICE CAREGIVERS TO

In 1999, Rabbi Klainberg joined the
Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network,
where he now specializes in caring for
those who lived through the Shoah. He
is able to share experiences, build trust
and offer comfort to those who
suffered and survived. He often speaks
to them in Yiddish, the language many
find comforting.

Rabbi Klainberg is utilizing his year as a
Shenkman Fellow to hone his profes-
sional caregiving skills and continue to
offer spiritual comfort to the sick and
dying. His responsibilities include
service to private individuals, residents
of the Danto Nursing Home,
Beaumont Hospice, and Huron Valley
Sinai Hospital. He also serves as
Spiritual Director for the Shalom
Providence initiative at St. John
Providence Hospital.
