Detroit: The Memories of Yesteryear

Written in 1983 by Arnold Wisper

Where did they go, those days of joy?
Where are the places I loved as a boy?
Where are the friends who shared my
young pains?
Where are the days, clouded with rains?

Arnord & Marion Wising

I remember the times of sunshine
and fun.
I remember my love for most everyone.
School days at Tuxedo and Linwood,
Roosevelt, Durfee and Central so good!

At Dexter and Elmhurst selling papers at ten,
"Get your News, Times and Free Press", I shouted then!
The Jewish Chronicle we got in the mail,
With Bar Mitzvahs and weddings in greater detail.

Gayety and Avenue, Burlesque with a zest
Cass Theatre presented stage at its best.
Avalon, Dexter and the Royal Show
Picadilly and Westown, where did they go?

Shar Zedak, Bnai Moshe, Temple Beth El,
Houses of worship, I remember them well.
My mother belonged to her beloved Zedaka,
And was also a member of the worthy Hadassah.

Boeskeys, Lefkofsys and even the Brass Rail,
For a corn beef sandwich and Vernors ginger ale,
Remember the nights at the Gambling Pub,
The Powaton, Club Royale and the 10-40 Club?

We went to Grand Circus, Palmer Park, Belle Isle,
To sit under the trees and spoon for a while.
The hotels were ablaze with glamour and color.
The Statler, Book Cadillac and even the Tuner.

For Detroit the sports teams constantly shines,
The Tigers, the Red Wings and also the Lions.
We bowled at Palmer Park, Log Cabin, State Fair.
Those were the days, when we had not a care.

On Saturday night with my date and her flower,
She had her choice, White Castle or White Tower.
Crowley Milner, J. L. Hudson, the downtown stores,
Someone told me they padlocked their doors.

There are so many places I'd still love to see.
Are the street cars still running or past history?
Are Vernors and Bordens still part of the scene,
Or Lafayette chili dog when I was a teen?

Ah, Good 01' Detroit as I look back and wonder,
Where is the city of lightening and thunder?
Where did they go, those days of joy?
Where are the places I loved as a boy?
