Nathan Pszenica, Eve Lerman and Hannah Pszenica celebrated at the
Livonia Recreation Center.

moved by a beautiful setting, but keep
in mind that you'll need to go there
frequently to talk to the food and
beverage director, take measurements,
meet with the photographer and the
florist or drop things off."
Robin Greenberg of West Bloomfield
chose Joe Dumars Fieldshouse in
Shelby Township for the b'nai mitzvah
party for her twins, Jacob and Rachel.
Greenberg and her husband, Larry,
were impressed with the many activi-
ties the facility offered.
"Our main concern was that
the kids would be kept busy," said
Greenberg. "We didn't want a formal
dance party; we just wanted them to
have fun."
Joe Dumars exceeded her expec-
tations with a variety of activities
that included indoor miniature golf
(complete with waterfalls and tropi-
cal plants), a 30-foot climbing wall, a
dual-level high ropes course, laser tag,
a bungee trampoline, slot-car race-
way with computerized scoring and
lap times, a 35-foot inflatable slide, a
free-throw shootout lane for big prizes
(someone recently won $400), and a
full redemption arcade with more than
40 popular games.
The site also has a recently renovat-
ed outdoor area with a bar, fireplace, a
waterfall and stream, three volleyball
courts, horseshoe pits and a large
banked oval track for racing radio-
controlled vehicles.
Because of the distance, the
Greenbergs hired a bus to transport
the guests to and from Orchard Lake
Middle School in West Bloomfield.
When planning the bat mitzvah
party for her younger daughter, Libby,
which will take place next March,
Greenberg decided on the new Zap
Zone facility in Farmington Hills.

"We wanted a place that was closer
to home this time," she said. "You
never know what the weather will be
like in March, and this way we can
eliminate the extra cost of the bus?'
The Livonia Recreation Center,
which features a swimming pool with
waterslide, gymnasiums and game
rooms, was the scene for the bat mitz-
vah party of Hannah Pszenica of West
Bloomfield.
"We knew we were going to have
people of all ages," said Hannah's
mother, Eve Lerman, "so I liked the
fact that there were a lot of different
activities. Some of the adults went
swimming and rock-climbing and
played pool, too."
To keep costs down, Lerman made
centerpieces from potted plants, barn-
boo placemats and tea lights in glass
holders that she bought at Ikea, and
the guests took home the plants at the
end of the evening.
Whirlyball of Novi is another popular
sports-oriented site for parties where
most of the guests are children or teen-
agers, such as bar and bat mitzvahs.
"I was seeking a venue that was
somewhat unconventional and mod-
erately priced," said Gerald Kunin of
West Bloomfield, who chose to have
daughter Lauren's bat mitzvah party at
Whirlyball of Novi. "The guests were
primarily children, but I also had a
small group of adult friends and fam-
ily members.
"The facility offered food selections
that were satisfying to everyone, and
there was a separate room that allowed
the adults to socialize away from the
tumult of the kids' activities?'
There are many other options to
choose from, depending on the size
