Camp she directs in Pontiac
will be getting a behind-the-
scenes theater experience by connect-
ing with a professional stage produc-
tion planned for families.
Rehearsals for If You Give a Pig a
Pancake, which will be staged July 22
at the Meadow Brook Music Festival,
are going to be held at the Creative
Arts Center, where the arts camp is
located and where campers will par-
ticipate in theater instruction sessions.
The play, based on the story by
Laura Joffe Numeroff, tells about a pig
that gets a pancake and then wants
lots beyond that food. The pig initially
wants syrup to sweeten the dish, then
wants to take a bath after getting
sticky from the syrup and later goes
on to other wants that become adven-
turous.
The story offers some messy fun
shared by 8-year-old Laura and her
curly-tailed friend, Felicia. The role
of Felicia will be played by Emily
Sutton-Smith, an executive at the
Williamston Theatre Project in
Michigan.
John Manfredi, who has directed
many theater productions around the
state and was education director at
the Creative Arts Center, is directing
this youth-centered comedy, which
is having its Michigan debut. He
recently was cast as Pablo Picasso in
the production of Jeffrey Hatcher's A
Picasso at the Performance Network
in Ann Arbor, playing through July 19.
"We have a wonderful partnership
with John Manfredi," says Paster, who
has been with the center for 15 years.
"He's going to be doing some acting
workshops, and our campers get to
see the show for free."
The camp, in its 27th year, has four
different sessions and meets 10 a.m.-
3 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. Campers,
between the ages of 6 and 12, experi-
ence both fine and performing arts

programs and take field trips.
"Our campers get a taste of all
kinds of art, and it will be great to
get this special drama element:' says
Paster, who expresses her Judaism by
attending different kinds of religious
services on Friday evenings. "Being
able to take the kids to see the show
will be a super treat."
Paster, who has been a publicist
for the Attic Theater and worked
on concert series and art camps in
Southfield, also has been associated
with the Detroit Council for the Arts.
With bachelor and master degrees in
English, she has taught at Wayne State
University and Oakland Community
College.
Numeroff, whose books have been
translated into Hebrew as well as
many other languages, loved reading
as a child and sold her first children's
book before graduating from col-
lege. Her other titles include What
Mommies Do Best/What Daddies Do
Best, When Sheep Sleep and If You
Give a Mouse a Cookie, which was
staged last year at Meadow Brook.
Other books in the If You Give
series include If You Give A Moose
A Muffin and If You Give A Cat A
Cupcake.
"Theater is my first love:' Paster
says. "I think the trade [of providing
theater space for providing theater
instruction] is a win-win."
