Vitamin C plays a role in the pro-
duction of cartilage, muscle, and
blood vessels, and is an anti-oxi-
dant that protects the body
from "oxidative stress."
Oxidative stress is a cell
process thought by some
to contribute to aging.

A fair amount of con-
troversy surrounds the
claimed preventative/
curative benefits of
vitamin C. The Mayo
Clinic and others have
observed that while
many uses of vitamin C
have been proffered, few
have been found by science to be
significantly beneficial, including
as treatments for cancer, diabetes,
heart disease, asthma, and others.

Even the scientific support for
vitamin C as a cold treatment is
limited to a reduction in duration
in only one-tenth of adults and
some prevention for those living
extreme lifestyles, e.g., sub-arctic
soldiers and marathon runners. I
hope this adds some clarity.
