Fighting For Freedom
Future automobile dealer Marvin Tamaroff, right, lied about his age
to join the Army at 17. Pictured with World War II comrade "Smitty"
(James A. Smith), Tamaroff says his war experiences helped give him
the savvy to succeed in business.

the stroke impact her nutritional

A
nswer (continued from
last time): Dear Cecilia,
Last time I discussed
certain physical and neurologi-
cal conditions that can interfere
with a stroke patient's nutritional
well-being.
Depending on the nature and
severity of the stroke, there are a
number of action steps that may
prove useful in maintaining the
stroke victim's nutritional health:
• Consuming sufficient liq-
uids—particularly liquids
that offer nutritional bene-
fits (in some cases, liquids
t1- /' may need to be thickened,
or their temperature
altered, to make them
easier to swallow);
• Eating soft/tender
foods and smaller or
pureed pieces of food
that are easier to chew
and swallow;
• Eating small meals
throughout the day, using
special utensils, if necessary;
• Enhancing the flavor of foods
with bolder seasonings/flavors
to overcome taste deficiencies;
• Most importantly, eating regu-
lar, well-balanced, nutritious
meals—a Registered Dietitian
can tailor a specific plan.
