Vote for Leo "Best Coney" on WDIV wealth of the sitter. Reproduced in full color throughout the book are portraits done of family members, including portraits of Adeline Moses Loeb and Carl M. Loeb, done between 1920 and 1925 in the painterly style of earlier times. The strength of these paintings is that they often capture the person from inside out, through expressions and gesture. So each portrait enhances the reader's under- standing of the personalities whose lives intersect in this history. John L. Loeb Jr. has sponsored an exhibition, "The Jewish Community in Early New York, 1654-1800:' which has been shown in venues around the country since 1979. Speaking in 2001 at a reopening of the Adeline Moses Loeb Gallery in the Fraunces Tavern Museum in Lower Manhattan, he spoke of American patriotism, which "must be an almost instinctive response to a land so blessed?' He went on, "In the truest sense, patriotism, to me, is expressed in the daily lives of ordinary men and women whose conduct as citizens is governed by their belief in and prac- tice of the ideals and traditions that are the glory of the American democ- racy — men and women who believe in freedom not only for themselves but for their neighbors, who seek opportunity without denying it to others, who understand that democ- racy requires tolerance?'
