Dear
Bar , y
mother is at
home recov-
ering from a
stroke. Might
the stroke impact her nutritional
well-being? Thanks, Cecilia.

nswer: Dear Ceci-
lia, You're right to be
. _concerned about your
mother's nutritional well-being
after her stroke. A stroke's impact
on brain function can be sig-
nificant—potentially resulting in
substantial impairment of physi-
cal and neurological abilities.

Here are some physical and
neurological conditions to watch
for that may interfere with a
stroke patient's nutritional
( well-being:
i N \\ • Difficulty swallowing
‘''' ) (aka dysphagia) that can
include poor tongue
t„
control, choking, drool-
ing, inability to use a
straw, and improper
,
gag reflex that can
interfere with proper
nutritional intake;
• Loss of taste that can
decrease the stroke pa-
tient's desire to eat;
• Loss of motor control (e.g.,
the arms/hands) may limit the
stroke patient's ability to prop-
erly feed him or herself;
• Short-term memory loss may
interfere with proper tracking of
nutritional intake.
