Lasting Impact
As Buckman steps into his next pro-
fessional post, Deborah Anstandig,
in the first graduating class of FJA,
continues to be impacted by his role
at FJA.
Completing her master's degree in
Jewish education through the Pardes
Educators Program in Jerusalem,
Anstandig, 24, spends part of
Shabbat at the Buckman home
whenever she is back in Detroit.
"It started when Rabbi Buckman
invited me to join his family for
Shabbat learning and a delicious
meal," she said. "I would come,

my family. Their home became the
cornerstone for my religious devel-
opment, questions and Jewish living.
Rabbi Buckman is my teacher and a
cherished mentor — long after high
school graduation!'
This fall, Anstanding will teach
10th-graders Tanach (the Hebrew
Bible) at SAR, a modern Orthodox
school in Riverdale, N.Y. Buckman
has guided her through questions
and ideas as she begins this next
phase in Jewish education.
"It is inspiring to see the impact
that one family can make on a corn-
munity," she said.
"Detroit is forever changed for the
better because the Jewish Academy
became an important institution.
But what's most important for me
is that I am forever impacted by the
dedication and talent of Rabbi Lee
Buckman." n
