Love Of Learning
The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's Alliance for Jewish Education has
announced the 2009 winners of the Diane
& Emergy Klein Award for Excellence in
Jewish Education.
Both winners are congregational school
teachers at Temple Israel, West Bloomfield.
• Michelle Markzon of West Bloomfield
is a sixth-grade Judaica teacher who has
been instrumental in introducing a new
curriculum for her students.
•Amy Scapelliti of Farmington Hills is
a kindergarten teacher who strives to find
new and creative ways to connect Judaic
content for her students.
The Kleins, of Southfield, endowed the
award in 2006 to "recognize the dedica-
tion and creativity of those teachers who
demonstrate a love of Jewish learning
and bring their talents and energy to the
classroom."
Winners earned scholarships to attend a
professional conference.

Fulfillment

"In Israel, we have an essential need for manpower. We can't afford to have our
gay men and women feel uncomfortable while they are serving. We need them."

— Israeli gay rights activist Anat Nir quoted in "Can Gay Friendliness Boost Israel's

Image?" (JTA, June 16). StandWithUs, a U.S.-based Israel advocacy group, hosted U.S. and

European journalists and gay activists in a panel discussion prior to Tel Aviv's Gay Pride

Parade. Soldiers talked about gays in the Israel Defense Forces. In the late 1980s, the IDF

reversed its policy of not promoting gay soldiers to the rank of commander. In Israel, which

depends on nationwide conscription to fill its ranks, the issue of homosexuality has been

less divisive than it has been in the U.S. Army.
