'Up North' In Keego Harbor

Enjoy Petoskey Chicken, Iditarod Burgers and other rustic treats at the Lodge.

p

OTPOURRI
After opening in 1991, it
became a popular restaurant for
the food and usual fare one might expect
to enjoy at a Northern Michigan site.
However successful the Lodge Grill & Bar
was, its move in 2006 to a locale just four
or so blocks away proved to be even more
in keeping with the restaurant's motif ...
Now the Lodge, formerly on Orchard Lake
Road in Sylvan Lake, could have at its new
nearby location in Keego Harbor the decor
it always hoped for ... A handcrafted true
lodge with hand-hewn logs along the walls
and bar ... This together with Northern
Michigan wood gave the aura one gets from
a true upscale log cabin feeling.
Where seating previously was for 120, the
Lodge Grill & Bar, on Orchard Lake Road
between Cass Lake Road and Middlebelt in
Keego Harbor, now seats 160 plus 35 stools
at the bar and a patio for 40 more ... Its
more rustic interior includes hand-built
booths by owner Greg Miller and a carpen-
ter friend, and tables made from tree trunks
in a sports bar theme, including about 40
television sets, six with large screens.
This year marks the 18th year since open-
ing at the former Sylvan Lake locale ...
serving its popular Itidirod Burger favorite,
Penne Rustica (Andouille sausage, shrimp,
chicken, penne pasta with shredded asiago
cheese and cream sauce) ... Five years ago,
Greg owned Maria's on Walnut Lake Road,
West Bloomfield, with Artie Oliverio cook-
ing for him and teaching Greg how to cook
while he prepped for Artie ... Greg sold
it to Artie four years ago, with the name
changed to Maria's by Artie Oliverio, who is
now at his own new restaurant, Oliverio's on
Benstein, Commerce Township.

bought an even bigger one.

my brother Skip and his wife, Suzi; Les
and Jan Kaplan; Mike and Suzi Gantz
and their children Adam and Mason;
Lori and Steve Bronson; Joan Sage; Karen

uncle and aunt, Leo and Shirley Kaplan;
George and Pyllis Gouson; my mother-

law, Barry Kallen, and others.
"Our first mate was usually my dad, Phil
Kaplan. If you walked along the beach on
the weekend, you could always see some-
one you knew to round out our passenger
list. Some days it was like a Mumford High
reunion at Langdon's which was located
on Pontiac Trail, just west of Orchard Lake
Road. On a typical Sunday, you might see
Paul Felch and Lowell Rodd, Lenny and
Suzy Rosenberg; Lenny Borman and his
six kids; Karen and Bob Spector; Dave
and Marshal Wein; Stuart and Maxine
Brickner; Barbara Weisman; Richard and
Shelly Golden, and many faces one might
not have seen in years."
