Dear
Bar :Re-
cently, I was
diagnosed with
dehydration.
What should I
know about it? Bernice

-

nswer (continued iron -.
last time): Dear Bernice,

Last time I discussed that
dehydration can occur when you
lose more fluid and salts than you
replace. I also looked as symp-
toms of severe dehydration.

Anybody can be at risk for dehy-
dration if their fluid loss exceeds
their intake; however, certain cat-
egories of people are at increased
risk of dehydration:
• Athletes in training/competition
and those who do strenuous
physical work;
• The elderly in general, but
•-,particularly those with
)
'i chronic health issues, or
who may be on medica-
i
t,
tions that contribute to
i

fluid loss (e.g., diuretics);
• Those who are not
properly acclimated
to hot/humid climates
or extreme altitudes they
encounter;
• Anyone who experiences pro-
longed diarrhea or vomiting;
• Infants and young children
because of their metabolic rates
and susceptibility to diarrhea;
• Those with chronic diseases
such as diabetes, kidney disease,
or alcoholism.

I hope this answers your question.
