T

he Oak Park-based
Visiting Nurse
Association of Southeast
Michigan has given
Shirley Lawson its Sandra M. and
Alfred I. Sherman Award, recogniz-
ing home health aide excellence.
The Sherman Award is
bestowed annually to a VNA
home health aide who lives the
organization's mission, vision and
values. Home health aides typical-
ly work under a nurse's supervi-
sion and assist homecare patients
with personal care needs such as
bathing, dressing and grooming.
In 2001, Sandra Sherman, VNA
board member for 35 years, and
her husband, Alfred, continued
their commitment to VNA by cre-
ating a living legacy through an
endowment that funds the award.
The award is among the first of its
kind to acknowledge the contribu-
tions of home health aides, often
unsung heroes and heroines of
the home health care industry.
Lawson, a Detroit resident, has
served VNA for 16 years. Her
professionalism and high moral
character have earned her the
respect of her peers and fellow
employees.
Founded 111 years ago, VNA of
Southeast Michigan was the first
homecare organization to serve
Southeast Michigan. It currently
helps 8,500 people each year live
with health, independence and
dignity in the comfort of home.
VNA is a Medicare-certified, not-
for-profit organization that pro-
vides home health care, hospice
and corporate wellness services
to residents of Wayne, Oakland
and Macomb counties and sur-
rounding communities.
