We're Doctors, Too I read your very interesting article "Eye Opener" (May 14, page B1). It was very well done. The only error that you made was you missed the fact that optometrists (O.D.$) are "eye doc- tors," too. In fact, O.D. means Doctor of Optometry. Under the column "What is Macular Degeneration?" you said, "An eye doc- tor, an ophthalmologist, can diagnose whether you have early AMD by exam- ining your eyes for large drusen or col- lection of waste which is very accu- rate. But what you left out is the fact that ODs can do the same and do it every day in their practices. And they do not hesitate to refer AMD patients, whose eyesight may be threatened, to a retinal-vitreous specialist. What I object to most in your well- done article is the fact that you were prejudicial by, in effect, strongly imply- ing that anyone who has AMD must go only to an ophthalmologist for the diagnosis versus an optometrist. The vast majority of Israeli Jews recognize that allowing the Palestinians to have their own state — which includes responsibility for security — would be a mortal threat to the Jewish nation. At this point, even the so-called "moderate" Arab leaders still reject the notion of a Jewish state. Therefore, Israeli Jews totally reject the "two-state solution:' Similarly, stopping any building within exist- ing community while the Israelis and Palestinians are not in any way close to an agreement is utterly unreasonable, as it does not place any restriction on Arab building in these same areas. In a letter sent by then President George W. Bush to then Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, the United States recognized that the large population blocs of Jews in Judea and Samaria meant that it is unrealistic to expect any agreement that will force Israel back into the borders of 1948. Israel's security depends, of course, on God, but we must do what we can to ensure its survival. Please write your government officials about the urgency of the situation. Unfortunately, during World War II, Jews in America were for the most part too apathetic to challenge the president and the administration to do more to help save the millions of Jews who were being slaughtered in Europe. We must not repeat this mistake. This is not a partisan issue; it doesn't matter whom you voted for. It's Israel's survival that is at stake, and we must all get involved. Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg West Bloomfield Confront Campus Hate Anti-Semitism has taken off in Europe, and we Jews in the U.S. are oblivious to what is happening here at home. As Robert Sklar so well pointed out in his Editor's Letter titled "Activism 101" (June 4, page A5), anti-Semitism is alive and well on campuses of higher education. The University of Michigan, for example, which is well endowed by Jewish philanthropy, has a disturbing record of allowing an anti-Israel/ anti-Semitic environment in some classrooms and on campus. The University of Michigan Press made a profit of about $1 million per year as the sole U.S. distributor of Pluto Press' United Kingdom-published anti-Semitic/anti-Israel books. These offensive books were finally removed from the University Press shelves at the end of 2008, when the Pluto Press contract was not renewed. The fact remains that the univer- sity administration did not spend a dime of the profits or say one word to counter the anti-Semitism and anti- Israel bias spread by their Pluto Press sales. That lack of contrition should have awakened our Jewish communi- ty. Alas, it did not; donations continue to roll into U-M and other colleges and universities where there are bla- tant examples of Jew-hatred. The Jewish elite talk about aca- demic freedom while the freedom of Jewish students is slowly being eroded. Just think of what will hap- pen when our university-trained anti-Semites come to power in 15-20 years. Oh well, it can't happen here! This is the United States and not Europe!
