Wolf Gruca arrived in Detroit from
Poland in 1949. Having survived the
ghetto and the loss of his entire family
in the camps, he was intent on rebuild-
ing his life here, but he did not speak
English and had no money. Someone
suggested he try Hebrew Free Loan.
"I remember like it was yesterday, I
talked to the case worker and said
when I learned the language and
found a job, I would repay the loan."
Over time, the experienced tool maker
did pay back the loan, and raised his
family here: children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren, all benefiting
from HFL's investment.
Years later, Mr. Gruca, who never
forgot what he calls "the good deed
Hebrew Free Loan did for me,"
walked into the HFL office and made
a generous donation.
"Nobody made me, ft was done of
my own free will, because, thank God, I
have the ability to do if. When times in
Detroit are so difficult, and people
cannot find jobs, and they need help, I
feel priviledged to give a donation to
Hebrew Free Loan. They helped me,
and now they can help someone else."

Your donation to Hebrew Free
Loan strengthens our community.

Hebrew Free Loan provides interest-
free loans for living expenses,
medical fees and many other

costs, tuition assistance, summer
camp, training, and much more. If
you or someone you know needs

Content aside, the Cairo speech
was an exercise in narcissism. The
president talked about himself,
what he thinks, what he wants,
what he believes. This is not typical
of past U.S. presidents and, frankly,
it is distasteful. He is our president;
his legitimacy derives from our
consent, and he should speak in our
name, not his own.
The speech also highlighted
his ambivalence about the United
States. He is clearly uncomfortable
reminding the world how much
we've done for them. Just as he
neglected to remind the mob in
Berlin that they owe their freedom
to American soldiers, he failed to
tell the crowd in Cairo that America
has saved more Muslim lives in the
past 20 or so years than any other
country on earth. He missed an
important opportunity. They need
to hear it.
