Summer Learning
Rabbi Steven Rubenstein of
Congregation Beth Ahm in West
Bloomfield will
teach two sum-
mer mini-courses
starting the last
week in June; the
classes are open
to all interested
lifelong Jewish
learners in the
community. Each
Rabbi
learning series is
Rubenstein
three sessions long.
One course meets on Monday nights;
the other, Tuesday mornings:
The Monday night series, "The
Modern Marketplace and Jewish
Ethics:' will meet from 7:30-9 p.m.
on June 29, July 6 and July 13. This
mini-course will use Jewish ideas
and texts to explore several issues
which have been in the forefront of
the news lately: June 29, "From Top to
Bottom: Executive Pay and the Living
Wage"; July 6, the Mall, the Internet
and the Modern Consumer"; and July
13, "Debt."
The Tuesday morning mini-course
is titled "Exploring the Siddur-
Shabbat Morning Service." It will
meet 10-11 a.m. on June 30, July 7,
and July 14. This will be an introduc-
tory-level look at the prayers of the
Shabbat morning service.
The tuition for each of these mini-
courses is $20 for members of Beth
Ahm and $25 for guests. Advance
registration is requested, and atten-
dance at all of the scheduled sessions
is highly recommended. However,
for those who will miss one or more
sessions because of summer vacation
plans or other circumstances that
preclude attendance at every session,
there is a drop-in option for attend-
ing individual sessions: $10 per class.
To register, make a check payable
to Congregation Beth Ahm, print
"adult ed" on memo line, and mail
to (or drop off at) the shul office,
Beth Ahm, 5075 W. Maple Road, W.
Bloomfield MI 48322. To help gauge
how many seats and sets of study
materials will be needed for the first
session of each course, it would be
appreciated if prospective students
would try to get their registration in
to the Beth Ahm office by noon on
Friday, June 26.
