nswer: Dear Bernice,
Simply stated, dehydra-
tion occurs when you lose
more fluid and salts than you re-
place, and your body doesn't have
enough water and other fluids to
carry out its normal functions.
The consequences can be serious.
The adult human body is about
60% water. Water is essential
to human life. It provides the
medium in which all physical and
chemical processes of life occur.
Mild to moderate dehydration
can usually be reversed by
increased fluid intake; how-
ever, severe dehyrdation re-
,
quires immediate medical
attention. Some symptoms
) of severe dehydration are:
• Abnormal or extreme
thirst;
• Loss of appetite;
• "Flushed" (markedly
red) skin, or dry/inelastic
skin that doesn't "bounce
back" when pinched;
• Dry mouth, lack of sweating,
little or no urination, or dark
urine;
• Nausea, the chills, physical
fatigue, or mental confusion;
• Low blood pressure, rapid
heartbeat, or fever.
More on dehydration next time.
