"The recent and shocking incident that took place last week at the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., underscores the sad reality that there
is still work to be done to educate people on viewing and treating others with
equality and respect.
"We send our support to our colleagues in Washington at such a difficult time
and stand by in your hour of need. Our condolences go out to the family of the
security guard killed in the incident. Like decent people all around the world, we
are deeply saddened and troubled by this outrageous event.
"Unfortunately, even now, there are misguided and, sometimes, evil individu-
als who bear unbridled hate for Jewish people and who even deny the Holocaust
ever happened.
"At the Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus in Farmington
Hills, we constantly strive to open the eyes, minds and hearts of visitors. We not
only illuminate the horrific events of the past and pay homage to those who
bravely came forward to help, but also demonstrate how those lessons can serve
us well in the world of today.
"This incident hopefully was an isolated one, but our history has taught us to
be ever vigilant. The safety and security of our visitors and staff are always a top
priority for us at the Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus.
"We hope last week's tragic event will inspire the community as a whole to
learn about the past and look to the future with greater tolerance for our differ-
ences. Let history not repeat itself."

"We are in constant contact on an ongoing basis with the proper federal and
local law enforcement authorities, including our local police partners throughout
the community. Information and reports we have been provided with from vari-
ous law enforcement agencies and others, such as the Anti-Defamation League,
indicate that there is no imminent threat in Michigan. We continue to ask our
communal organizations, religious institutions and members of the community,
as we do on the heels of such incidents and always, to be vigilant, aware of sur-
roundings and make sure necessary access controls are in place.
"We remain in close contact with law enforcement and continue to monitor
these incidents:"
- Steven Kaufman, director, communitywide security,
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
"Words of hate often escalate into acts of hate, which is why we have to take
any kinds of threats very seriously. The true irony of all this is that the inci-
dent at the Holocaust museum took place at a venue where we often say, 'Never
again: This was the very place created to remember and teach about evil in the
world."

"My district is the home of the first freestanding Holocaust museum in the
United States of America. For 25 years, it has stood as reminder of the horrific
consequences of extremism and hate.
"Just a few months ago, the founder of that museum, Rabbi Charles
Rosenzvieg, passed away. Although he is gone, his life's work will educate future
generations about the horrors of the Holocaust so that such senseless violence
should never again be repeated. Last month, this body passed a resolution hon-
oring his life and memory.
"So it is with an especially heavy heart today that I come to the floor to urge
passage of H. Res. 529, a resolution condemning the violent attack on the United
States Holocaust Memorial Museum on June 10.
"The Holocaust museum exists as a place to reflect and mourn murderous
prejudice and hatred. Yet yesterday, a senseless attack, motivated by the same
prejudice and hatred, resulted in the tragic death of security guard Stephen T.
Johns. It is a sad reminder that we all must remain vigilant in continuing the
work of Rabbi Rosenzvieg to purge discrimination and hatred from this world."
