\yf THE GREATER
West Bloomfield
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

James Brown, who also hosts
"Inside the NFL" on Showtime and is
a founding partner of the Washington
Nationals baseball team, told the
organizers he was "humbled" after he
saw the list of past honorees. Brown
changed his entire schedule around to
participate Monday.
MJSF officials have lots of stories
to tell of prominent athletes overcom-
ing aloof reputations at previous
Greenberg Invitationals:
•"Ernie Banks was almost in tears
when we honored him," said David
Blatt, a longtime board member and
new executive director of MJSF. And
Joe Namath came because of Dick
Schaap and was so gracious."
• Passman mentions baseball Hall
of Famer Dave Winfield. "We were told
[by NV-infield's staff] that he would
not sign autographs. And he signed
more than anyone else" that day. "The
same was true of [Sandy] Koufax," the
Jewish baseball Hall of Famer who is
well known for shunning reporters
and autograph seekers.
Part of the reason the stars interact
so well is the group is relatively small
and "they have the whole day to inter-

act with them," said Hedy Blatt, David
Blatt's wife and the MJSF's new direc-
tor of communications and events.
Another draw at Monday's event
will be a tennis tournament. Tam-0-
Shanter's tennis pro has organized a
round-robin open doubles pool, the
first time in four or five years that the
Greenberg Invitational has included a
tennis component.
But, it's not the fun and games alone
that keeps the community coming
back to support the Greenberg event.
The tournament, along with the
annual Michigan Jewish Sports Hall
of Fame induction event and other
efforts, has raised more than Si mil-
lion for prostate cancer education and
research.
Beneficiaries have included the
Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center
in Farmington Hills, part of Detroit's
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute, and Karmanos' Genetic
Counseling Service and the Royal Oak-
based Beaumont Cancer Center.
In recent years, funds have also
been used to send hundreds of under-
privileged children to summer camp
through the Bear Hug Foundation.
