GETTING THE FACTS STRAIGHT

As members of the American Association of Orthodontists, Drs. Hersh and Beattie
value the Importance of professional ethics and promoting honest information to
our local communities. Here, we set the record straight on some common myths
about orthodontics.

MYTH: Braces are just for kids.
FACT: Approximately 20% of our patients are adults. We offer numerous
alternatives that are esthetically pleasing.

MYTH: My family dentist is also an orthodontist.
FACT: An orthodontist has 2-3 years of specialized training beyond dental
school. A dentist may treat some cases but does not have the formal
recognized training. M orthodontist 2rily practices orthodontics and treats
hundreds of patients insuring proper form, function and beauty.

Maxwell Elkiss

Noa Madison Elkiss and Maxwell
Spencer Elkiss, children of Davee
Elkiss, will share the bimah at Temple
Israel in West Bloomfield on Friday,
June 12, as they celebrate their b'nai
mitzvah. They are the grandchildren
of Audrey Elkiss and the late Stanley
Elkiss. Sharing in the simchah will be
their great-grandmother Sylvia Markel.
Both Noa and Maxwell are students
at Walnut Creek Middle School in
Walled Lake. Noa felt volunteering at
Friendship Circle in West Bloomfield
was the most rewarding of the many
mitzvah projects she did. Maxwell felt
growing his hair and then donating 11
inches of it to Locks of Love was most
meaningful for him.

became a bat mitzvah
at Congregation Adat
Reyn in Springfield
on Saturday, May 9.
She is the daughter
Goldstrom
of Marc and Caroline
Goldstrom and
sister of Jonathan. Her proud and lov-
ing grandparents are Iris and Glen
Goldstrom formerly of Oak Park of Fort
Wayne, Ind., and Audrey and Arthur
Nachbar of Springfield, Va.
Elizabeth is a student at Washington
Irving Middle School in Springfield. For
her mitzvah project, she enjoys making
blankets for rescue dogs.

he felt to be most meaningful.

MYTH: Orthodontists charge more than general dentists for orthodontic treatment.
FACT: This is not necessarily true; there are dentists charging more
and some charge less. It's not the same work - the value in seeing an
orthodontist for treatment is that he/she is an expert.

MYTH: Braces can receive radio, Internet, and satellite signals. Patients with braces
will set off security detectors.
FACT: Just not true - but sure does sound interesting!

MYTH: Any dentist may join the American Association of Orthodontists.
FACT: Only orthodontists may become members of the American

Farmington Hills. She
Tobin
is the daughter of Jodi
and Keith Tobin and
the sister of Ethan. Sharing in the cel-
ebration were her grandparents Rhoda
and Marshall Tobin and Arline Bittker.
She is also the granddaughter of the
late David Bittker.

MYTH: Braces are painful and take two years or more.
FACT: Modem technology and low forces allow orthodontic care to be very
comfortable. Some may be worn for months, not years.
