More Than Skin Deep

Specialist learns about dermatologic
conditions in Israel during fellowship.

D

r. Laurie Linden Kohen, a
lifelong Detroiter, recently
returned from a two-week
dermatology fellowship at the Sheba
Medical Center at Tel HaShomer in Tel
Aviv, Israel.
Kohen, chief resident in dermatol-
ogy at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit,
was the recipient of the Livingood
International Elective award for out-
standing scores on her in-training
examinations. After considering sever-
al well-established international des-
tinations, Kohen realized her dream
of experiencing life as a dermatologist
in Israel, thanks to her chairman Dr.
Henry Lim.
Kohen's clinical experience enabled
her to learn firsthand about derma-
tologic conditions considered rare in
the United States, but endemic to the
Middle East, such as Leishmaniasis,
which is caused by the bite of certain
sand flies. She also gained valuable
insight in treating skin diseases such
as Pemphigus vulgaris, an autoim-
mune blistering disease that is more
prevalent in Mediterranean Jews.
In addition to the traditional topical
and systemic treatments for psoriasis,
Kohen was particularly fascinated by
one of the unique Israeli remedies
— ultraviolet light exposure at the
Dead Sea.
Kohen learned about a wide array
of clinical conditions, and observed
nuances regarding the nationalized
health care system in Israel as well
as the training protocol for Israeli
physicians. She participated in grand
rounds and rounded with the inpa-
tient dermatology team.

Heart Disease Screening

A free online screening tool created
by Detroit-based Henry Ford Hospital
enables consumers to measure their
risk for heart disease with a simple
click of a computer mouse.
The screening tool, called Know
Your Numbers, takes consumers
through a 10-minute interactive per-
sonal health test and then provides a
four-page assessment of their results,
including the risk factors they can
manage to help lower their lifetime
risk of having a heart attack.
Heart disease is the leading cause of

Dr. Laurie Kohen in Israel

Although dermatology was the focus
of her two-week visit, Kohen did have
the opportunity to experience many
of the cultural, religious and historical
highlights of Israel. Day trips to Yad
Vashem, the Old City of Jerusalem, the
Dead Sea and Masada reacquainted
Kohen with her Jewish heritage. She
had the opportunity to have dinner
with two rabbinical students as well as
an aspiring medical student.
Kohen says the Livingood award is
the culmination of her academic career,
which includes graduating as valedic-
torian from Bloomfield Hills Andover
High School, with highest distinction
from the University of Michigan and as
one of the top five students in her U-M
Medical School class.
She looks forward to utilizing the
things she learned as she joins Drs.
Steven Shumer and Wendy Sadoff
in practice this July at the Franklin
Dermatology and Surgery Center in
Southfield.

death in the United States; more than
1 million Americans suffer a heart
attack annually.
After logging onto the site, www.
henryford.com/knowyournumbers,
consumers will be greeted by a Henry
Ford physician who will guide them
through the site, explaining their risk
factors and results along the way.
Consumers can download their
results and learn about how to make
lifestyle changes to reduce their heart
attack risk. The results also should be
shared with their physician as part of
their care-management plan.
