THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

Trimming Tabs

Sposita's price breaks please palates and pocketbooks.

p

OTPOURRI
As it usually is, the restaurant
was crowded wall to wall when
the thought was conceived ... Joe and Lois
Sposita, owners, their general manager
son, Tony, manager son, Joe Jr., and man-
ager cousin John Flynn, looked around,
then at each other ... And gave thanks for
their huge success.
The result is a new price-downsized din-
ner menu at Sposita's Italian Ristorante,
14 Mile, east of Farmington Road, West
Bloomfield, one of Metro Detroit's most
flourishing restaurants ... The very
popular Sposita's has certainly picked the
right time to unveil its price-downsized
menu of much gratitude for the continual
audiences who jam the place to enjoy its
Italian goodies ... Its new menu surely
eases a lot of pocketbooks in the present
economic softness ... Because of neces-
sary higher supplier prices for top-quality
food, some meat entree prices are forced
to remain the same.
New daily feature is the introduction of
a true ground sirloin, the real thing, with
mushroom gravy, including minestrone
soup or salad, potato, vegetable and side
of pasta, 511.95 ... Chicken entrees have
been reduced from $21.95 to S19.55 ...
The popular eggplant parmigiana is down
to $17.95 ... Pasta with meat, marinara,
tomato sauce or garlic and olive oil is
515.45.
Such lower price action brings nothing
but praise for its timeliness ... Extremely
important, too, is that there's no change
in quality or portion size, with all entrees,
except ground sirloin, continuing to include
"the works" (antipasto, minestrone soup,
salad, choice of potato, vegetable, spaghetti)
... Pasta dishes are again accompanied by
everything except spaghetti.

FATHERS

And even lower prices still
prevail for folks who don't
want the accompanying dishes
... The reasoning behind this
highly greeted measure taken
by the Sposita's folks is simple,
says Joe ... "What better time
than when it is needed most
to say 'thank you' for our suc-
cess? And what better way to
make things easier for our
customers than to save them
money?" ... Amen.
THE POOR ECONOMY does a good
enough job without some people spread-
ing false rumors about a restaurant clos-
ing or is closed ... Latest phony talk is
about Italia Fresca on Orchard Lake Road
and Pontiac Trail, Orchard Lake ... It is
open seven days a week, Monday-Friday,
11-10; Saturday, 11-11; Sunday, 2-9 ...
Dinner reservations are advised weekends,
especially 6:30-8.
MAIL DEPT.... "We sent a Bacco res-
taurant gift card to a young couple just
getting married. They were vegan and
we knew that Chef Luciano [owner/chef
Luciano Del Signore] is so very talented
that he could prepare outstanding vegetar-
ian food. They loved what he prepared and
now go back there regularly. It has become
their favorite restaurant. Each time they
go to Bacco [on Northwestern, Southfield],
Luciano prepares something different and
wonderful for them" ... Herb and Babs
Kaufman.
QUESTION & ANSWER ... "Thanks
for the update on how to figure out how to
tip at a restaurant. But isn't it true that the
person who waits on me doesn't always get
it?" ... Sarra Lowenstein
[No, Sarra, your server receives the tip,
but how much of it might depend on the

system used by the establish-
ment. He or she keeps it all,
or shares it with others who
may be part of a team, or the
restaurant has a tip pool with
the money divided among
themselves and other team
members, or management
collects all tip money, divides
it according to a set formula,
and includes it in his or her
paycheck.]
BIG CHANGES by the
double power duo, new executive director
of Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation
and Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame,
David Blatt, and wife, Hedy, communica-
tions and events gal, will be very evident
with the 19th Annual Hank Greenberg
Memorial Golf Invitational, Monday, June
15, at West Bloomfield's Tam O'Shanter
Country Club on Orchard Lake Road, West
Bloomfield.
Attendees to the award ceremonies
reception banquet following golf will for
the first time in many years be treated
to a sumptuous sit-down dinner served
by waitpersons ... Also an open bar and
hors d'oeuvres ... There'll even be a raffle
with everybody entered without charge
... And because of the soft economy,
complete prices for the dinner only will
be $125 per person and S195 for two ...
A "New Look" too, with Baseball Hall of
Famer Cal Ripken, CBS NFL host James
Brown, ESPN's Jeremy Schaap and Hank
Greenberg's son Steve surrounded by
Detroit Tiger banners in the baseball
atmosphere honoring the late Tiger great.
MAKING ROUNDS ... To Fishbone's
Rhythm Cafe, Northwestern Hwy.,
Southfield, for jambalaya ... To Eurasian

shrimp Saigon ... To Thang Long,
Madison Heights, for vermicelli with
ground shrimp on sugar cane, a
Vietnamese favorite.
BACK IN THE 1940s through 1970s, a
group of gents formed the Crises Club in
Downtown Detroit, holding their Friday
lunches at the Pick Fort Shelby Hotel on
Lafayette ... One of the fellows, Willie
Stone, (248) 538-0395, has his eyes and
ears open for a reunion of the politicians,
lawyers, businessmen, etc. who made their
weekly Fort Shelby get-togethers eagerly
awaited happenings ... Many of them
are gone, but those around like Willie and
William Clay Ford, etc., are being sought
to lunch again with reminiscing memories
at the now Doubletree Fort Shelby about
those Chamber of Commerce cruises,
attending Lions football and Tigers base-
ball games together, etc. ... Members
also included guys like Sam Katz, Jason
Honigman, Ben Levenson, Ruby Sklar,
Mayor Albert Cobo, Charlie Edgecomb, D.
Lyle Fyfe, Ralph Wilson, etc.
Willie can be found every Tuesday
lunching at Deli Unique West Bloomfield,
in the West Bloomfield Plaza, Orchard
Lake Road, with Milt Ring, Harry Shapiro,
Dr. Marvin Rosen, Ed Meer, etc. ... Their
lunch togetherness is a regular weekly
ritual for them.
CONGRATS ... To Jackie Nash on her
60th birthday ... To Sandy Maza on her
70th birthday ... To Dorothy Haber on her
90th birthday ... To Sharon Green on her
birthday ... To Zygie and Irma Allweiss
on their 60th anniversary ... To Phillip
and Norma Layne on their 42nd anniver-
sary.
