Lewis, who received the instru- ment while a high-school freshman in Ohio, for the most part taught himself how to play and then joined bands, first taking to stages in Dayton and later doing shows around Colorado, California and Texas. Lewis, 28, returned to Ohio last year and formed yet another group, Magic Jackson, that quickly picked up steam and will be performing at the Ann Arbor Summer Festival in the free Top of the Park programming. Lewis, who also sings, is joined by Jeff May on guitars and vocals, Justin Moore on drums and Mike McKewen on bass. They will take the Rackham Stage 7 p.m. Saturday, July 4, at the Ingalls Mall. The festival, running June 12-July 5, has a priced Mainstage series that features the Capitol Steps, Los Lobos, Savion Gover and Diana I:rail among many familiar and debuting acts. In its 26th season, the event will launch Festival Fringe, an alternative per- formance series presented with the University of Michigan Museum of Art. All told, there will be an eclectic mix of music, dance, comedy, film and family activities. Magic Jackson will be among 47 acts showcased as part of Top of the Park. "We'll do 90 percent of our original stuff, with covers thrown in here and there just for fun," says Lewis, who writes most of the music and lyrics. "Our sounds are funk first, rock sec- ond and soul third. A lot of the lyrics are tongue-in-cheek and over-the-top." Some of the songs will be from the group's upcoming recording. Lewis, who attended the Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, Ohio, learned the studio trade and is applying those skills to the planned CD. "A lot of the songs are rooted in my life," Lewis explains. "Look Around," with the most soul, has to do with his feelings after break- ing up with his fiancee. "Meatfinger" was written to make women feel attractive and wanted. "Music is what I am — listening, playing or writing," says the singer- guitarist-songwriter, who heard classic rock around his home while growing up and participating in musical the- ater through a community arts pro- gram. While living in Texas, he became active in a synagogue and played gui- tar at numerous events. Three months after Magic Jackson began appearances, the group won the Dayton Band Playoffs. "Of all the bands I've played with, this one really strives to be a bunch of nice guys," Lewis says." We get crazy on the stage, but we're all introverts. We've got this high-energy thing and jump around. "We're getting a reputation for hay- ing a party atmosphere. Anyone who needs to get a party started should know we're the guys to call." The Ann Arbor Summer Festival runs June 12-July 5 at various Ann Arbor venues. Prices vary for Mainstage shows presented at indoor theaters. Free programs fill the Ingalls Mall, which is on Washington Street near the Burton Memorial Tower. For a complete schedule, go to annarborsummerfestival.org . (734) 764-2538.
