Suzanne Chessler Special to the Jewish News A young generation of singers and dancers —dubbed M Generation — will be the entertainment at "An Evening of Song, Speech & Vision," hosted by Chabad Lubavitch of Michigan Tuesday eve- ning, June 16, at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi. M Generation, an award-winning, New York-based boys choir that sings in several languages and dances to upbeat music, will offer some lighter fare to complement the speech of Yehuda Avner, who has served Israel in several capacities, including ambassa- dor to Australia, and now is a member of the Ambassadorial Appointments Committee. The dinner event is dedicated to the memory of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. "Our songs are performed in a Jewish modern style to recorded music:' says Boris Rukiter, founder, art director and composer of most of the selections presented by the 12 boys between the ages of 5 and 12. "We do about 10 performances a year, and this will be our first time in Michigan." M Generation, which is a project of the Chabad organization Friends of Refugees of Eastern Europe, won first place in the 2003 International Chanukiah Awards in Germany, where the competition featured Jewish enter- tainers from 17 countries. "The songs are mostly not religious, and we sing them in English, Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian:' says Rukiter, who auditions interested youngsters. "The boys sing about many subjects, including peace, childhood and com- munity work." Choir members can spend 10 hours each week in rehearsal under the lead- ership of Rukiter and choreographer Ganna Makarova. Kailand Novak, 12, a sixth-grader, hopes to be an actor and singer and appreciates the performance opportu- nities he gets through the choir. Songs range from Rukiter's "Shalom" to the Beatles' "When I'm 64:' "It's fun to be with all the kids and do the hip-hop moves': explains the youngster, who joined after his grandmother saw an article about the group. "I've been able to travel and see Hollywood, Boston, Toronto and Chicago." Kailand says that when M Generation goes to other cities, the members spend the first day getting settled, the next day performing and the final day looking around. "To learn songs in other languages, we go over each word and what it means;' Kailand says. "When we travel, we get new religious experiences and are treated very war ❑ "An Evening of Song, Speech & Vision" begins 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at Rock Financial Showplace, 46100 Grand River, in Novi. $36.
