June 2009

hrough donations collected
primarily at the Shirt Box
in Farmington Hills, the
Neighborhood Service Organization
opened a clothing shop in Detroit that
offers no-cost clothing to unemployed
men seeking jobs.
The program began as a one-time
call for donations of gently used men's
clothing by Shirt Box owners Ron
Elkus and Rod Brown. The need was
so great, the Shirt Box agreed to con-
tinue to serve as a drop-off center.
"The Shirts Off Our Back: From
Our Closet to Yours" initiative, which
began as a partnership in March 2008,
encourages the donation of used men's
business apparel, including dress shirts,
slacks, ties and sports coats to help
NSO's clients dress for success when
applying for new jobs and making the
transition back into the workforce.
Similar programs for women
already exist, but not one for men.
The approximately 1,000-square-
foot store in the Michigan Building in
downtown Detroit near the NSO offic-
es is staffed by NSO volunteers and
open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays.
Sheilah Clay, NSO's president and
CEO, said, "Making a good impression
during an interview is critical for any-
one applying for a job. Our affiliation
with the Shirt Box has been very ben-
eficial as we work with those looking
to regain the self-confidence needed
to find and keep jobs in today's mar-
ketplace."

Senior Life Leadership
The Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan
Detroit will hold its first installation
on Wednesday, June 17, at 5 p.m. at
the Norma Jean and Edward Meer
Jewish Apartments, on the Eugene and
Marcia Applebaum Jewish Community
Campus in West Bloomfield, Maple
and Drake.
Nancy Grosfeld, president, Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
will deliver greetings. The installing
officers will be Marvin Fleischman
and Mark Schlussel.
The slate of Jewish Senior Life of
Metropolitan Detroit officers and
board members includes: Frederick

John, homeless for 10 years, found

his interview wardrobe among gen-

tly used menswear at this Detroit

shop that's a partnership between

Detroit's Neighborhood Service

Organization and the Shirt Box in

Farmington Hills. The free clothes

helped him look professional and

land a job.

Explained Elkus, "In today's econo-
my, individuals looking for work need
all the support possible. It is heart-
warming to know that our customers
and friends are making a real differ-
ence."
Donations of gently used goods can
still be made at the Shirt Box, 32500
Northwestern Highway, Farmington
Hills.
