Episodic stress (e.g., your boss
criticizing you) is a normal (albeit,
unpleasant) experience of everday
life. Among its normal
i reactions to stress (part
of the "fight or flight" re-
(, ',.';
sponse), the body releases
a hormone called cortisol.

Chronic exposure to
stress (and cortisol) has
been associated with,
among other things,
something called
"atypical depression"—
a condition that has
been described as "self-
medicating with food."
Often the "food-medicines" con-
sumed are calorie-rich, high fat/
sugar "comfort foods," which can
lead to obesity and other serious
health issues.

What to do?
• As best you can, eliminate/re-
duce the stressors in your life;
• Don't hesitate to seek profes-
sional medical/nutritional help;
• Seriously reduce refined carbo-
hydrates/sugars and saturated
fats in your diet, while increas-
ing fiber-rich fruits/vegetables
and omega-3s. I hope this helps.
