Beth El Student Map
Fifth-grade students in Temple Beth
El's Bloomfield Township-based
religious school celebrated the birth
of the State of Israel, Sunday, May 3,
with the dedication of a map of Israel
they had created as part of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
Artist-in-the-Schools program,
funded by the DeRoy Testamentary
Foundation.
For five consecutive Sunday morn-
ings, the students had worked with
artist Dr. Michele Sider to create a
plaster interactive, three-dimensional
map of the state. In addition, each
child was assigned either a city or
area of Israel to research and to find
10 interesting facts. When they were
not in the art room, they were in the
computer lab looking up informa-
tion about their assigned site. The
facts were then printed, color coded
to match the colors on the map and
placed randomly on a chart on the
wall next to the map.
At the dedication, the parents had
20 seconds to find as many facts
as they could that their child had
researched.
