, : Dear George, you

may
be referring to an "e-

..1...rumor" that's been circu-
lating on the internet since about
2006, which cited miraculous
cancer cures attributable
to asparagus. The major-
internet fact-checking

organizations have never
been able to substantiate

the provenance of the

item. The plain truth is
that there is no clinical
proof that asparagus,
by itself, cures cancer.

Asparagus officinalis
is a member of the
lily family in the genus
Asparagus, from which the
vegetable asparagus is derived.
Native to much of Europe and
Asia, asparagus is widely cultivat-
ed in the modern world, including
right here in Michigan, which
produces up to 25 million pounds
annually (3rd in the nation).

An excellent source of folic acid,
asparagus supplies a nice balance
of other nutrients, including thia-
min, vitamin B6, rutin (may play
a role in inhibiting some cancers),
potassium, fiber, and glutathione
(an important cell antioxidant).
Asparagus has no fat or choles-
terol and is low in sodium and
calories. All-in-all, a welcome
addition to many people's diet.
