Bill Berman has
been the recipient
of many honors
and awards,
including the
Detroit Jewish
community's
1111
prestigious
highest honor,
Federation's
Harold Berry
Fred M. Butzel
Memorial Award;
the Israeli Peace
Medal (he has
made 20 trips
to Israel); the
Cyrus Adler
Award of the
American Jewish
Ata
Committee; the
Rabbi Krakoff
Human Resources
Award of the Interfaith Round
Table; JESNM Mesorah Award;
Boston Hebrew College's Lown
Distinguished Service Award;
the Achievement Award of the
Michigan State Association of
Home Builders; the Leonard N.
Simons Award from the Jewish
Historical Society of Michigan;
and, most recently, Hillel Day
School of Metropolitan Detroit's
Dream Maker Award.
Berman now is the senior
attendee at the "Taubman meet-
ing," an annual gathering of local
philanthropists who pledge their
financial support to the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
raising about 60 percent of its
Annual Campaign funds. Named
after shopping mall mogul A.
Alfred Taubman of Bloomfield
Hills, it replaces the "Fisher meet-
ing," which carried the name of
Franklin philanthropist and Jewish
Detroit patriarch Max Fisher, who
died at 96 in 2005.
"The most amazing thing about
Bill is that, at the age of 91, he con-
tinues to display the same energy,
creativity, leadership abilities and
philanthropy as he did 50 years
ago when I met him," said Alan E.
Schwartz of Bloomfield Hills, an
original member of the Michigan
law firm of Honigman Miller
Schwartz & Cohn. "He just keeps
on going; he's an inspiration to the
entire Jewish community"
Has Berman ever thought of
tapering off in his activities?
"No:' he responded firmly. "I just
can't slow down."
