Yes To The Zoo!

Expanded educational oppor-
tunties are in the offing for zoo
goers.
The Royal Oak-based Detroit
Zoological Society has received
a $10,000 grant from the Battle
Creek-based W.K. Kellogg
Foundation to enhance teach-
ing programs.
"This grant helps to support
our goal of providing outstand-
ing and unique educational
opportunities to the corn-
munity we serve:' said Detroit
Zoological Society Executive
Director and CEO Ron Kagan.
Supported in part by the
Kellogg grant, "Outdoor
Learning: Organic Gardening
and Michigan Native Plants"

may reply, "Not in a month of Sundays".
Sunday, the traditional day of leisure, is
not be trifled with by completing some
work for someone else.
You might suggest that you could get to
the task the "day after never." However, I
can now hear someone reply, "Then that
means your will do it?" Subtlety is often
unheard.
Such people would also be immune
to the imaginative response,"I'll get to it
when pigs can fly." With the talk of genetic
mutations these days, that picture could
come to fruition sooner than we think.
If you will settle for some lame excuses,
try one of the following:
• I can't leave; the man on TV said I

will teach participants about
organic gardening techniques
and plants native to the state
as well as the effects of invasive
plant species on Michigan's
ecosystems.
The grant also will help fund
projects to produce food for the
zoo's animal enrichment activi-
ties and help support ongoing
programs such as "Eco Impact:
How Our Choices Affect the
Earth and Its Inhabitants."
The program focuses on
the impact of human beings
on the Earth and teaches its
participants how to recycle
compost and incorporate
biodegradable materials into
their daily living.

Quotable

"One of the reasons I ran was because I felt like I represented
a significantly underrepresented group. There aren't a lot
of young women, and there certainly aren't a lot of young
moms."

— Debbie Wasserman Schultz, 42, elected to the U.S.

House in 2004 as a Democrat and Florida's first Jewish

congresswoman. She's rising through the Democratic Party

ranks while raising three kids and battling breast cancer.

should stay tuned.
• I think I'll stay home to work on my
cottage cheese sculpture.
• I really should take some time to
check the freshness dates on my dairy
products.
• I've made an appointment to go to
the bakery and watch the buns rise.
•Wouldn't you know, my chocolate
appreciation class meets that night.
• I prefer not to do that kind of work
on a day that ends in "y".
• Actually I'm observing National
Apathy Week.
• I prefer to remain an enigma.
If all else should fail, do not say "Yes";
just give a weak, "Well, maybe."

Reduce Cooling Costs

•Place your air-conditioner at the shady side of the
home. It works more efficiently there.
•Cook less and do not heat up the kitchen. Eat
more salads and lighter foods that do not require
the stove or oven to prepare.
•Keep storm windows and doors in place during
the summer months if you use air conditioning.
Just as they prevent heat loss, they also prevent
heat gain.
•Wear lighter, looser clothing in the summer.
• Insulate your attic and walls to hold in the cooler
air.
• Use box fans, ceiling fans and attic fans instead of
air conditioners.
• Do not place lamps or other heat sources near
the air-conditioner thermostat.

Jewish Thought on the Environment

"And God said: 'Let the waters swarm with swarms
of living creatures, and let fowl fly above the earth
in the open firmament of heaven."
