SHLAIN, San Francisco surgeon and best selling author. died at his home in Mill Valley, Calif., on May 11, 2009, at the age of 71. Leonard was born and raised in Detroit and moved to San Francisco in 1966, after serving as a captain in the U.S. Army in France. He was a surgeon for 38 years at California Pacific Medical Center, where he headed the laparoscopic surgery department and was an early pioneer of laparoscopic gall- bladder and hernia surgery. He was also an associate clinical professor at UCSF. Dr. Shlain was well known nationally and internationally as an author and lecturer. His books Art and Physics, The Alphabet v. The Goddess, and Sex, Time and Power were best sellers. His latest book Leonardo Brai —The Left Right Roots of Creativity will be published spring 2010. Dr. Shalin was larger than life, always ready for the next challenge and was always making a difference in the world, with his patients and friends, in his life and especially in the lives of his family. He is survived by his wife, Judge Ina Levin Gyemant (retired); his children, Kimberly Brooks, Tiffany and Dr. Jordan Shlain; stepchildren, Roberto Gyemant, Anne Paris, Esq.; nine grandchildren; siblings, Marvin Shlain of Detroit and Sylvia Goldstick of Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Frances Shlain, and his sister Shirlee Wollak. A celebration of Dr. Shalin's life was held Friday, May 15, at Temple Sherith Israel in San Francisco. She was a retired special education teacher in the dis- trict of Oak Park. Shulman She was also a mem- ber of the Jewish Federation, a board member of the Women's Division, a board member of the Alliance For Jewish Education, a child advocate for the Oakland Country Probate Court, a member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and the Detroit Yacht Club.
