How to Send Letters

We prefer letters relating to JN articles. We reserve the right to edit or reject letters. Letters of
225 words or less are considered first. Longer ones will be subject to trimming. Letter writers
are limited in frequency of publication. Letters must be original and contain the name, address
and title of the writer and a day phone number. Non-electronic copies must be hand signed.
Send letters to the JN: 29200 Northwestern Highway, Suite 110, Southfield, MI 48034; fax (248)
304 - 8885; e-mail, lettersgthe jewishnews.com . We prefer e-mail.

Value AIPAC
Robert Sklar's Editor's Letter regard-
ing the American Israel Public Affairs
Committee ("AIPAC's Edgy Imprint,"
May 14, page A5) and David Victor was
most timely, but probably the most
important article since I've been a sub-
scriber to the Jewish News when I came
to Detroit in 1950.
You have given a well-deserved honor
to David Victor, AIPAC's homegrown
national president. He is an outstanding
leader and is following the footsteps of
his wonderful father, Steve.
I am very surprised and very sad-
dened that so many in our community
do not really understand just how cru-
cial AIPAC is to Israel's survival. Because
of AIPAC members' hard work, the U.S.
Congress continues to overwhelmingly
support Israel. AIPAC constantly lob-
bies Congress to continue the S3 billion
yearly appropriations to Israel, which is
vital to her defense.
Another important program is
AIPAC taking freshmen U.S. represen-
tatives and senators to Israel so they
can see firsthand Israel's vulnerable
borders. AIPAC, which is absolutely
bipartisan with no distinction between
Democrats and Republicans or anything
in between, lobbies our governmental
officials constantly to make sure they
understand the importance of a strong
U.S./Israel relationship.
Israel faces its greatest threat since
its existence because of Iran getting
close to acquiring nuclear weapons and
threatening to destroy Israel. We didn't
take Hitler seriously, but we must take
the Iranian threat seriously.
For AIPAC to continue protecting
Israel's survival and wellbeing, AIPAC
needs new members and support. It is
incumbent upon everyone who is con-
cerned about Israel's future and safety to
join AIPAC, the most important Jewish
organization in the world.
If, for some reason, I was only able to
support one Jewish/Israel organization,
it would be AIPAC.

What A Bookstock!

Bookstock '09 truly was a commu-
nity event ("It's Ready, Set, Go For
Bookstock Sale," April 23, page A18).
`frith hundreds of volunteers from all
over our community, we sorted, boxed,
schlepped, set up, tore down and ran
the most successful sale we have ever
had.
Kudos to all!
It takes six to eight months, and
thousands of volunteer hours, to plan a

sale of this magnitude. We are extremely
grateful to the entire Jewish community
without whom we could never run and
execute such a huge endeavor.
This year, despite the depressed econ-
omy, Bookstock was able to see a whop-
ping 25 percent increase in its gross
sales. We congratulate all participants
on a job very well done.
Our heartfelt thanks also go out to our
sponsors, the Jewish News and Schostak
Brothers and Company. The Jewish News
continues to help us to reach out to the
community, keeping everyone informed
of sorting dates, dropoff dates as well
as advertising forgotten photos and
incidentals found in the many boxes and
bags of donations. Schostak Brothers
and Company continues to be a constant
friend, supporting us throughout the
year. The advice from these two groups is
invaluable and one of the reasons for the
success of our project.
We wish to thank our advertisers:
DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, Great
Oaks Landscape, Korotkin Insurance
Group, Perspectives Custom Cabinetry,
Sound Check, Wallside Windows and
Weight Watchers. Their donations
enabled us to expand our advertising
into new communities.
Our partner organizations were indis-
pensable. Their assistance and volunteer
base made this sale run efficiently.
Our thanks to: Yeshivat Akiva, Frankel
Jewish Academy, Hillel Day School PTO,
Jewish Community Relations Council,
Hadassah, Hillel of Metro Detroit, Jewish
Community Center of Washtenaw
County, Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit, ORT America,
B'nai Brith International Great Lakes
Region, National Council of Jewish
Women and Oakland Literacy Council.
Finally, we are always grateful to
Brandeis University National Women's
Committee Detroit Chapter for its guid-
ance in turning Bookstock into the
community event it has become.
We would be remiss if we did not
mention the news media's help in adver-
tising Bookstock. Because of media
involvement, we have been able to see
Bookstock rise as a community event to
be appreciated and enjoyed by all.
We will begin collecting books again
in the fall. Thanks again for being so
generous with your time and dona-
tions this year for Bookstock '09; please
start saving your books and media for
Bookstock '10 now
