Cancer Institute's Cancer
Genetic Counseling Service
(CGCS) has received a
$100,000 grant from the Michigan
Jewish Sports Foundation to
establish the Michigan Jewish
Sports Foundation Genetic Testing
Assistance Fund.
The grant, payable over the next
three years beginning this year, will
enhance the CGCS outreach and
provide genetic testing for individu-
als of all ethnicities who are at risk
of Hereditary Breast and Ovarian
Cancer Syndrome (HBOC). HBOC is
the most common cause of inherit-
ed forms of both breast and ovarian
cancer and is highly prevalent in the
Ashkenazi Jewish population.
Over the past 25 years, the
Commerce-based Michigan Jewish
Sports Foundation has raised more
than $1 million to support pros-
tate cancer treatment and care
through grants to Karmanos Cancer
Institute's Lawrence and (dell
Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center
in Farmington Hills.
Said David Blatt, executive
director, Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation, "This syndrome also
predisposes to other cancers, such
as male breast cancer, and prostate,
pancreatic and melanoma cancers,
making Karmanos' genetic services
a critical component in assuring a
healthy family history."
HBOC results in at least 16,000
new cases of breast and ovarian
cancer in the United States each
year. HBOC is due to inherited
mutations in BRCA1 (breast cancer
gene-1) and BRCA2 (breast cancer
gene-2).

Karmanos' CGCS provides can-
cer risk assessment and genetic
counseling, as well as the facilita-
tion of genetic testing for individu-
als who are concerned about their
cancer family history. The cost of
testing for HBOC, which can be as
much as $3,100, is not always cov-
ered by health insurance, therefore
leaving those at high-risk in danger
of not having information that can
save their life.
The Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation Genetic Testing
Assistance Fund will help fund
genetic testing for those people
who meet clinical criteria and are
at risk of HBOC but cannot other-
wise afford the testing. The Fund
will enable them to make informed
medical management decisions.
Contributions raised at
the Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation's 19th annual Hank
Greenberg Memorial Golf
Invitational on June 15, honoring
sports notables Cal Ripken Jr., and
James Brown, will directly ben-
efit Karmanos' Michigan Jewish
Sports Foundation Genetic Testing
Assistance Fund. For more informa-
tion on the golf invitational, go to
www.michiganjewishsports.org .

gan Jewish Sports Foundation,
