Dear
at
Bar
does it mean
when a food
item is mar-
keted/labeled
as "natural"? Thanks. Stephanie.
1
A
ns"er: Dear Stephanie.
Perhaps surprisingly. the
term - natural - as applied
to food items is not regulated
except for meat and poultry. The
term applies broadly to foods that
are minimally processed and free
of synthetic preservatives. arti-
ficial sweeteners, colors. flavors.
hydrogenated oils. stabilizers.
emulsifiers. and other artificial
additives. However. most foods
labeled. ''natural." are not subject
to government controls beyond
the regulations and heath codes
that apply to all foods.
The U.S. Dept. of Agri-
culture (USDA) requires
"natural - meat and poul-
try to be free of artificial
o's
colors. flavors. sweeten-
ers. preservatives and
ingredients ("artificial,"
generally. means not
occurring in nature)
and must be minimally
processed in a way that
does not fundamentally
change them. The label
must also explain the use
of the term "natural" (e.g.. such
as no artificial ingredients). La-
beling meat and poultry products
natural - does not refer to how
the sources of those foods were
raised.
-
I hope this helps answer your
question.
