Katsav On Trial

Tel Aviv/JTA — Former Israeli
President Moshe Katsav went on trial
in Tel Aviv on sexual offense charges.
Katsav was formally charged on
May 21 in Tel Aviv District Court on
eight counts, including two counts of
rape and one count of committing an
indecent act using force. All involved
aides when he served as minister of
tourism and president.
The trial will resume Sept. 1 after
the court's recess.
"We're embarking upon a tough,
long struggle to clear my name:'
Katsav told reporters before entering
the courthouse. "I promise again that
with God's help, I will emerge inno-
cent"
The allegations came to light three
years ago. Katsav rejected a plea
agreement to prove his innocence.

Even Populations?

Jerusalem/JTA — Jews and Arabs liv-
ing in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza
will reach equal numbers by 2016,
according to a Palestinian study. The
data was released by the Palestinian
Central Bureau of Statistics to mark
the day Israel achieved statehood.
The figures claim that 5.1 million
people calling themselves Palestinians
now live in Israel, the West Bank and
Gaza. There are 5.6 million Jews there.
According to the study, the
Palestinian population grew from
1.4 million in 1948 to 10.6 million in
2008, including Palestinians who live
in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

Nuke-Test Implications
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's Foreign
Ministry said it views a nuclear test by
North Korea with extreme gravity.
North Korea announced Monday
that it conducted a successful under-
ground test-firing of a nuclear weapon
as well as tests on a short-range mis-
sile hours later, according to reports.
"Furthermore, Israel is concerned
with North Korea's nuclear prolifera-
tion, which has negative implications
in this region:' the statement by
Israel's Foreign Ministry said.
"Israel expects the international
community to respond decisively
to the nuclear detonation by North
Korea, so as to transmit an unambigu-
ous message to other countries."
The test was similar in power to
the atom bomb dropped on Nagasaki
— about 20 kilotons. The test appar-
ently produced an earth tremor regis-
tering 4.7 on the Richter scale, the U.S.
Geological Survey told Reuters.
