Shelli Liebman Dorfman Senior Writer E laine Greenberg's plan is for those who attend Jazzalot: Music for the Soul to get two great things out the evening. Through the 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 2, event at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, she also strives to bring awareness to ovarian cancer, the type she herself battled. "I made a vow when I was diagnosed nine years ago to help others who were diagnosed with cancer," she said. "But I would do it in some way with my love of music." A longtime voice and piano teacher, Greenberg, along with her husband, Shelly, founded Living For Music, which fundraises for dona- tions to help individuals with all types of cancer. Proceeds from the concert will go to the organization. "The concert will focus on edu- cation and awareness of ovarian cancer," she said. "The statistic that 22,000 women will be diagnosed this year — and 15,000 will die — of ovarian cancer hasn't changed in the past 30 years since the war on cancer was first started. I want the public to be aware of this dis- ease as did my dear friend Carolyn Benivegna, whose memory we are honoring at this concert!' The program features Detroit's George Benson on sax and the Cliff Monear Trio. Cantorial Soloist Neil Michaels is working with plan- ners of the concert, cosponsored by Temple Israel. Greenberg's piano student, Jeremy Sherman, 16, of West Bloomfield will play his own compo- sitions. On June 3, the evening after the concert, Matt Prentice of Unique Restaurant Corporation will donate 10 percent of the cost of dinner at Deli Unique in West Bloomfield to Living For Music when diners pres- ent their concert tickets.
