A scholarship matching program
brings the school matches of up to
$ 100,000.
For many families, finding
funding sponsors or partners is
a prerequisite to enrolling their
kids at Akiva. Money available for
tuition assistance provides less
than 20 percent of actual student
needs; Akiva subsidizes the rest.
Says Sidney Katz, Akiva's innovative
executive director: "We're looking
for ways to close this gap. We hope
our Sponsor a Student scholar-
ship campaign and the scholarship
matching program will provide for
this need!'

With its unique position as Jewish
Detroit's only modern Orthodox
day school, and with a central cam-
pus yearning to be even more of a
town square throughout the day,
Akiva is poised, with the Jewish
community's help, to stay vital.
I hope whoever replaces Rabbi
Tsaidi considers a program similar
to his Lehava. Not held this year
but held often in the past, Lehava
(Flame) was a three-week learning
experience in Israel for older stu-
dents as part of the Jewish history
curriculum. The rabbi coordinated
and led the trip. Preparation taught
students about the struggle for
creation of the Jewish state and
enabled them to comprehend the
role of Medinat Yisrael (modern
State of Israel) in contemporary
Jewish life as well as in the future of
our people.
Rabbi Tsaidi also has encouraged
shelichim, Israeli teaching emissar-
ies who help infuse Akiva students
and their families with a deeper
love and connection to Israel and
Torah.
While moderating this year's
banquet, Howard Korman — par-
ent, president, board member,
basketball coach — articulately
captured the essence of Akiva:
"With each passing of the torch,
our school reaches new heights.
Rung by rung, brick by brick, we
are building a foundation of Judaic
and secular excellence with the
ultimate prize hovering at the top
of the ladder: the success of our
children."
As prizes go, that's a keeper.
It's a prize that mirrors the core
values of Shulamit and Rabbi
Tsaidi.
