Keith Lublin
I
ndustrialist and Jewish communal
leader Alan Zekelman received an
honorary doctorate from Bar-Ilan
University in Ramat Gan, Israel.
He was recognized for his Jewish
communal activism, support of Jewish
causes in the diaspora and Israel and
commitment to Bar-Ilan's Torah and
science ideology.
Zekelman, a Windsor native, was
president of various companies found-
ed by his late father, Harry, including
Atlas Tube Inc., a Canadian manufac-
turer of steel construction and indus-
trial tubing. At the age of 26, when his
father died, Zekelman assumed the
family business — which was later
sold — together with his brothers.
Active in Bar-Ilan's American
Friends organization, Zekelman
serves on the board and executive
committee, as treasurer and chairman
of the finance committee and is cur-
rent Detroit chapter president. He is a
member of Bar-Ilan's Global Board of
Trustees.
Les Goldstein, Midwest regional
director of American Friends of Bar-
Ilan University, said, "Everyone who
knows Alan Zekelman is inspired
by his deep commitment to funding
scholarships and Jewish educational
projects that have given Israeli stu-
dents from all socio-economic back-
grounds an opportunity to strengthen
their Jewish identity and gain a deeper
understanding of their magnificent
heritage. This honor for Alan is most
deserved, and all of us in this region
of AFBIU want to thank him for his
devoted service as a longtime offi-
cer and trustee of the organization
and president of its Detroit regional
board."
